The Modern Epidemic

As I woke up to a new day I wanted to share with you a piece I have written on:

Did you know that there are now over 100 documented autoimmune diseases?

We are living in the midst of a "Silent Surge." Over the last few decades, autoimmune diagnoses have climbed at an unprecedented rate. From Coeliac disease to Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis, our immune systems - the very systems designed to protect us - are increasingly turning inward.

But why now? And why is the journey to an answer so incredibly long?

The 4.6-Year Diagnostic Odyssey

For many, the first symptom isn't a diagnosis; it’s a feeling that something is "off." Yet, the average patient spends 4.6 years searching for an answer, often visiting five or more doctors before receiving a name for their suffering.

Because there are so many types, diagnosis is a puzzle. If you've spent years feeling like your body is an enigma, there’s a reason. Most conditions share these "Common Threads":

  • Profound Fatigue: A heavy, systemic exhaustion that sleep doesn't touch.

  • The "Mist": Cognitive brain fog and memory lapses.

  • The Heat: Low-grade fevers or localised joint and muscle pain.

  • The Gut Connection: Sensitivities that seem to appear out of nowhere.

As a health coach who navigated a 40-year odyssey from toddler symptoms to a Coeliac diagnosis, and later a 4-year wait for a Lupus diagnosis, I know this frustration intimately. This "waiting room wilderness" is where the mental load of chronic illness is heaviest. It is where we begin to lose trust in our bodies.

What’s changed?

For a long time, the conversation was limited to a few "major" conditions. But today, we know the immune system can misdirect its energy toward almost any tissue - from the thyroid (Hashimoto's) to the skin (Vitiligo) to the very lining of our gut.

The Rising Tide: We aren’t just imagining it. A major study recently published in The Lancet suggests that nearly 1 in 10 people are now living with an autoimmune condition. Most striking? The sharpest rise is among adolescents and young adults.

Why now? While our genetics provide the "map," our environment pulls the trigger. Having lived through 50 years of shifts in our lifestyle and environment - and raising my boys through this changing world - I’ve seen firsthand how these factors converge:

Three Pillars of the "Surge"

To understand why autoimmunity is on the rise, we have to look at the "23 hours" of our lives outside the clinical setting. The surge is rarely caused by one thing; it is a "Perfect Storm" of three modern factors:

1. The Hygiene & Environmental Shift

Our modern world is cleaner than ever, but our immune systems are "bored." Without natural environmental challenges, the immune system can become hypersensitized. Combined with the "Toxic Overload" of heavy metals and modern chemicals, our internal firewalls are under constant pressure. Exposure to microplastics and pollutants "confuses" our immune cells.

2. The Nutritional Gap

We are overfed but undernourished. The transition to ultra-processed foods and the prevalence of hidden gluten have created a landscape of chronic inflammation. For those of us with a genetic predisposition, these dietary stressors act as the "trigger" for the autoimmune gun. Consider the amount of ultra-processed foods and a lack of microbial diversity.

3. The Stress of Modern "Safety Signals"

Our nervous systems were not designed for the 24/7 digital hum of the 21st century. High cortisol and chronic stress signal to the body that it is "unsafe." When the body feels unsafe, the immune system stays on high alert, eventually leading to the systemic fatigue and brain fog that define the autoimmune experience.

Moving from "Coping" to "Artistry"

Understanding the surge is the first step in reclaiming your health. You are not a victim of your genetics; you are an artist working with a complex canvas. By addressing the gut, lowering the toxic load, and quietening the "inner judgmental voice," we can begin to send signals of safety back to the body.

  • The Art of the Reclaim: Understanding the "Why" behind this surge is the first step in reclaiming your health. It’s about learning to lower the "environmental volume" and signalling Safety back to your system.

At Holistic Health Artistry, we believe in the "Art of the Everyday" - finding small, bespoke ways to heal right in the middle of a busy, modern life.

I’m curious - how long did it take you to get your "answer"? Many of us spend years in the "unknown." If you're comfortable, share your timeline in the comments section.

"My Story"

Thirty Years of Artistry. A Lifetime of Resilience.

The Journey:

My path into holistic health wasn't chosen from a textbook; it was forged through a 40-year diagnostic odyssey.

I first experienced the symptoms of Coeliac disease as a toddler, yet I waited until I was 20 years old for an answer. Decades later, as I was raising my first child, Lupus began to whisper. Even with a lifetime of health advocacy under my belt, it took another 4 years of searching, testing, and advocating to finally be heard. I had my second child whilst navigating Lupus symptoms.

The "Cluster" and the Craft:

Today, I live with a complex internal landscape: Coeliac Disease, Osteopenia, Lupus, Raynaud’s, Sjogren’s, Scoliosis, and a splenic aneurysm.

I don't share this for sympathy. I share it for authority.

I know the bone-deep fatigue that sleep cannot touch. I know the frustration of the "Brain Fog" mist. And I know the sheer mental load of managing a body that feels like it’s in a constant state of "High Alert."

Why "Holistic Health Artistry"?

When you live with multiple, overlapping conditions, "standard" advice rarely works. Your healing must be Bespoke. It must be an Art.

I created Holistic Health Artistry to bridge the gap between clinical data and the reality of a busy, often chaotic, life. My mission is to help you find your own "Signals of Safety"—using garden-grown nutrition, nervous system rituals, and the wisdom I’ve gathered over 30 years of navigating the unknown.

You aren't a list of symptoms.

You are a masterpiece in progress.

Let’s start the reclaim, together.

Facebook Support Group

A Facebook group set up to support those living with Autoimmune Diseases or are living gluten-free, dairy-free life.

Emma Alexander-Cook

My name's Emma. I've been living gluten-free for over 25 years, and I've been dairy-free for over five years.

Health and Auto-immune Diseases

I have auto-immune diseases and expected to be on medicine for the rest of my life, but I didn't want to live like that. My rheumatology Doctor was so supportive of the change I wanted to make, and with their help, I now manage my auto-immune diseases by being strict with my diet.

It can be quite frightening when you first find out you have to change the way you eat but for some of us' Food is our medicine.'

I have several websites, write blogs, and I'm currently in the process of writing a book.

I trained to be Holistic Health Coach, Meditation and Mindfulness Teacher and Certified Gluten Free Practitioner in order to heal myself, my family and others who find themselves on the same journey as myself.

Photography

Our love for photography started on our travels. We wanted to capture images of the areas we travelled to both for our own records and for our family back at home. Some of these images were reproduced as watercolours. Our favourite images we display at home and friends often asked where we had purchased the pictures! Now you can purchase them online directly from us.

Coaching and Consultancy

Previously an IT Manager my skill set has come in very handy as I am both a Health Coach and also offer consultancy for small business starts up and fellow Health Coaches. This has included building websites and online profiles.

Our Family

Family is everything to me! We have a family of four boys where the age difference between the youngest and the eldest is 18 years. Two of our sons are also Gluten Free and Dairy Free. Emma is a Health Coach who specialises in helping individuals and families achieve their health and wellness goals. Ian runs his own business which began developing a Race Timer for diecast model cars.
