The Silent Surge: Why Autoimmunity is on the Rise
Art by: Emma Alexander Cook Holistic Health Artistry
As I woke up to a new day I wanted to share with you a piece I have written on:
Did you know that there are now over 100 documented autoimmune diseases?
For a long time, the conversation was limited to a few "major" conditions. But today, we know the immune system can misdirect its energy toward almost any tissue - from the thyroid (Hashimoto's) to the skin (Vitiligo) to the very lining of our gut.
The Rising Tide: We aren’t just imagining it. A major study recently published in The Lancet suggests that nearly 1 in 10 people are now living with an autoimmune condition. Most striking? The sharpest rise is among adolescents and young adults.
Why now? While our genetics provide the "map," our environment pulls the trigger. Having lived through 30 years of shifts in our lifestyle and environment - and raising my boys through this changing world - I’ve seen firsthand how these factors converge:
The "Western" Shift: Ultra-processed foods and a lack of microbial diversity.
The Toxic Load: Exposure to microplastics and pollutants that "confuse" our immune cells.
The High-Alert Life: Our nervous systems are under more chronic stress than 30 years ago, keeping us in "survival" rather than "healing."
The Diagnostic Odyssey: Because there are so many types, diagnosis is a puzzle - taking an average of 4.6 years and five different doctors to confirm. If you've spent years feeling like your body is an enigma, there’s a reason. Most conditions share these "Common Threads":
Profound Fatigue: A heavy, systemic exhaustion that sleep doesn't touch.
The "Mist": Cognitive brain fog and memory lapses.
The Heat: Low-grade fevers or localised joint and muscle pain.
The Gut Connection: Sensitivities that seem to appear out of nowhere.
The Art of the Reclaim: Understanding the "Why" behind this surge is the first step in reclaiming your health. It’s about learning to lower the "environmental volume" and signalling Safety back to your system.
At Holistic Health Artistry, we believe in the "Art of the Everyday" - finding small, bespoke ways to heal right in the middle of a busy, modern life.
I’m curious - how long did it take you to get your "answer"? Many of us spend years in the "unknown." If you're comfortable, share your timeline in the comments section.

"My Story"
Thirty Years of Artistry. A Lifetime of Resilience.
The Journey:
My path into holistic health wasn't chosen from a textbook; it was forged through a 40-year diagnostic odyssey.
I first experienced the symptoms of Coeliac disease as a toddler, yet I waited until I was 20 years old for an answer. Decades later, as I was raising my first child, Lupus began to whisper. Even with a lifetime of health advocacy under my belt, it took another 4 years of searching, testing, and advocating to finally be heard. I had my second child whilst navigating Lupus symptoms.
The "Cluster" and the Craft:
Today, I live with a complex internal landscape: Coeliac Disease, Osteopenia, Lupus, Raynaud’s, Sjogren’s, Scoliosis, and a splenic aneurysm.
I don't share this for sympathy. I share it for authority.
I know the bone-deep fatigue that sleep cannot touch. I know the frustration of the "Brain Fog" mist. And I know the sheer mental load of managing a body that feels like it’s in a constant state of "High Alert."
Why "Holistic Health Artistry"?
When you live with multiple, overlapping conditions, "standard" advice rarely works. Your healing must be Bespoke. It must be an Art.
I created Holistic Health Artistry to bridge the gap between clinical data and the reality of a busy, often chaotic, life. My mission is to help you find your own "Signals of Safety"—using garden-grown nutrition, nervous system rituals, and the wisdom I’ve gathered over 30 years of navigating the unknown.
You aren't a list of symptoms.
You are a masterpiece in progress.
Let’s start the reclaim, together.
